log jam

Tangled timber backup

A log jam is an accumulation of logs blocking a river, preventing timber from floating downstream to mills.

The term extends to any situation where progress is blocked by a pileup: a logjam of legislation awaiting committee approval, traffic logjam.

To break the logjam is to clear the obstruction and restore movement.

Also spelled as one word: logjam.
