floe

Arctic sea raft

A floe is a sheet of floating ice, typically broken off from a larger mass such as a glacier or ice shelf.

Floes range from small fragments to enormous platforms spanning miles, drifting with ocean currents and winds.

The term appears most often in the phrase ice floe and in discussions of polar regions, where floes provide habitat for seals and polar bears.

The expedition's ship navigated carefully through the floes.
