hydrocephalus

Fluid-filled skull

Hydrocephalus is a condition in which cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain, causing the head to enlarge—especially dangerous in infants whose skulls haven't yet fused.

The buildup creates pressure that can damage brain tissue.

Treatment typically involves surgically implanting a shunt to drain excess fluid.

Informally called water on the brain.
