cleft lip
Split upper mouth
A cleft lip is a congenital condition in which the upper lip has a split or gap, resulting from incomplete fusion of facial tissues during fetal development.
The cleft may be small or extend into the nose and palate.
Surgical repair is typically performed in infancy.
The older term harelip, referencing the split upper lip of a hare, is now considered offensive.
