meninges

Neural protective layers

Meninges is the plural of meninx, the three protective membranes that envelop the brain and spinal cord.

These layers—the dura mater, arachnoid, and pia mater—cushion and shield the central nervous system.

Meningitis is inflammation of the meninges, typically from infection: Bacterial meningitis can be life-threatening without prompt treatment.
