hellhound

Underworld guard dog

A hellhound is a demonic dog from folklore, typically depicted as a fierce, fire-eyed creature guarding the gates of the underworld or serving as an omen of death.

The most famous example is Cerberus from Greek mythology.

In modern usage, hellhound can describe any vicious or relentless pursuer: The debt collectors were hellhounds who wouldn't leave him alone.

It also appears in fantasy games and horror fiction as a standard monster type.
