Netherworld

Realm beneath earth

The netherworld is the realm of the dead in mythology and religion—the underworld, Hades, hell.

The word combines *nether* (lower, beneath) with *world*, placing the dead literally below the living.

By extension, netherworld describes any hidden, shadowy, or criminal sphere: the netherworld of organized crime, the netherworld of underground clubs.
