Inferno

Poetic damnation journey

Inferno is the first part of Dante's Divine Comedy, depicting the poet's journey through Hell's nine circles.

The work has shaped Western imagery of damnation so thoroughly that any reference to circles of hell or elaborate punishments echoes it: Like something out of Dante's Inferno. (Lowercase inferno is a large fire.)
