banshee

Celtic death herald

A banshee is a wailing female spirit in Irish and Scottish folklore whose shriek supposedly foretells a death in the family.

The word now commonly describes any loud, high-pitched screaming: The wind howled like a banshee, She let out a banshee scream when she saw the spider.
