Cerberus

Three-headed hound

Cerberus is the monstrous three-headed dog of Greek mythology who guards the entrance to the underworld, preventing the dead from leaving and the living from entering.

The name has become shorthand for any fierce, vigilant guardian: Getting past the building's doorman was like getting past Cerberus. (Lowercase cerberus is occasionally used as a common noun for any fierce watchdog.)
