death omen
Mortality's advance warning
A death omen is a sign believed to foretell someone's impending death.
Traditional examples include a black cat crossing one's path, an owl hooting near a house, or a clock stopping unexpectedly.
The term applies both to folk beliefs and to fictional portents: The raven was considered a death omen in many cultures.
Also called a portent of death or harbinger of doom.
