heavy rail

Full-scale train transport

Heavy rail is urban or regional passenger rail transit using dedicated tracks separated from road traffic, distinguished from light rail by higher capacity, longer trains, and typically grade-separated infrastructure.

Subways, metros, and elevated trains are heavy rail systems: The city's heavy rail network carries two million riders daily.

The term also applies to freight railroads using standard-gauge track with heavier loads than light rail can accommodate.
