tenant farms
Leased agricultural plots
Tenant farms are agricultural properties worked by farmers who don't own the land but rent it from a landlord, typically paying with cash, a share of the crop, or both.
The system was widespread in the American South after the Civil War, where sharecropping became the dominant form: His family had worked tenant farms for three generations before buying their own acreage.
