Guanajuato
Colorful hillside city
Guanajuato is a state in central Mexico and its capital city of the same name.
The city is known for its colonial architecture, colorful buildings climbing steep hillsides, and underground streets built in former riverbeds.
The state is historically significant as the birthplace of Mexican independence and was once a major silver-mining center: We spent a week exploring Guanajuato's winding alleys and plazas.
