colonial architecture
Settler-era building style
Colonial architecture refers to building styles transplanted from colonizing nations to their overseas territories, then adapted to local conditions.
In the United States, it typically means the Georgian and Federal styles of the British colonial period—symmetrical facades, central doorways, multi-pane windows.
Spanish colonial, Dutch colonial, and French colonial each have distinctive features shaped by climate and available materials.
The term also describes revival styles that imitate these originals: a colonial architecture subdivision built in the 1990s.
