gun carriage

Wheeled cannon base

A gun carriage is the wheeled frame or mounting that supports a cannon or artillery piece, allowing it to be aimed and absorbing recoil when fired.

Historical gun carriages were wooden with large wheels for transport across battlefields; modern ones are steel and often incorporate hydraulic systems.

The cannon sat on its original 18th-century gun carriage.
