saker

Large Eurasian falcon

A saker is a large falcon native to Europe and Asia, prized in falconry for its speed and power.

Sakers were historically favored by Arab falconers for hunting gazelle and other large prey.

The word also names an early type of cannon, drawing on the Renaissance practice of naming artillery after predatory birds.
