gun pit
Dug-out firing position
A gun pit is a fortified emplacement dug into the ground to position artillery or anti-aircraft guns.
The excavation provides protection for the weapon and its crew while allowing the gun to fire over the surrounding terrain.
Gun pits may be reinforced with sandbags, concrete, or timber: The soldiers spent the morning digging gun pits along the ridge.
