howitzers
Short-barreled artillery guns
Howitzers is the plural of howitzer, a type of artillery cannon that fires shells in a high arc.
Unlike guns that shoot directly at targets, howitzers lob projectiles over obstacles or fortifications.
They occupy a middle ground between flat-trajectory cannons and steep-trajectory mortars: The howitzers opened fire on enemy positions beyond the ridge.
