dysentery
Intestinal bacterial infection
Dysentery is a severe intestinal infection causing bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever.
It spreads through contaminated food or water and can be caused by bacteria or parasites.
Historically a major killer of soldiers and travelers, dysentery remains dangerous in areas with poor sanitation: Half the expedition died of dysentery before reaching the coast.
