bit-depth

Digital color granularity

Bit-depth measures how many distinct values can be recorded for each unit of digital data.

In digital images, higher bit-depth means more possible colors per pixel—8-bit allows 256 shades per channel, while 16-bit allows over 65,000.

In audio, bit-depth determines dynamic range: The recording engineer chose 24-bit depth to capture subtle nuances.

Higher bit-depth produces larger files but preserves more detail.
