low contrast
Narrow tonal range
Low contrast describes images, displays, or visual elements where the difference between light and dark areas is minimal.
A low-contrast photograph appears flat or washed out, with grays dominating rather than deep blacks and bright whites.
The term applies to screens, printing, and photography: The fog created a low-contrast scene.
In design, low contrast can be deliberate for subtlety or problematic for readability.
