grand duchy
Small noble realm
A grand duchy is a territory ruled by a grand duke or grand duchess—a rank below king but above ordinary duke.
Luxembourg remains the world's only sovereign grand duchy.
Historically, grand duchies were semi-independent states within larger empires: the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Grand Duchy of Finland under Russian rule.
