Ivan the Terrible

Muscovite despotic ruler

Ivan the Terrible was the first Tsar of Russia, ruling from 1547 to 1584.

He centralized Russian power and expanded the empire but became notorious for paranoid brutality, including the massacre of Novgorod and the murder of his own son.

His epithet "Terrible" translates Russian *grozny*, meaning fearsome or formidable rather than merely bad.

The name sometimes describes any tyrannical or volatile leader: My boss is Ivan the Terrible when deadlines approach.
