gongs

Mallet-struck metal circles

Gongs are large metal discs that produce a resonant tone when struck, used in orchestras, ceremonies, and as signals.

The gong that ends a boxing round or summons diners differs from the suspended orchestral gong, but both share the characteristic reverberating sound.

In British slang, gongs are medals or decorations: He came back from the war covered in gongs.
