tam-tam

Flat bronze disc

A tam-tam is a large metal gong, typically with a flat or slightly convex surface, used in orchestras and percussion ensembles.

Unlike bells or cymbals, it produces a deep, resonant tone that builds slowly when struck: The tam-tam crashed at the symphony's climax.

The term is sometimes used interchangeably with gong, though purists distinguish between them.
