claves

Cuban percussion pair

Claves are a percussion instrument consisting of two short wooden sticks struck together to produce a sharp, resonant click.

They originated in Afro-Cuban music and remain central to Latin rhythms, marking the distinctive syncopated pattern also called clave: The drummer laid down the beat while the claves kept time.
