tubular bells
Vertical metal percussion
Tubular bells are a percussion instrument consisting of metal tubes of varying lengths suspended vertically in a frame, struck with mallets to produce bell-like tones.
They appear in orchestral music to simulate church bells: The tubular bells rang out in the finale.
The instrument lends its name to Mike Oldfield's 1973 album, famous as the theme from *The Exorcist*.
