prayer wheels

Rotating mantra cylinders

Prayer wheels are cylindrical devices used in Tibetan Buddhism, containing scrolls inscribed with mantras.

Spinning the wheel is believed to have the same spiritual effect as reciting the prayers aloud.

They range from small handheld wheels to large drums mounted at temple entrances.

Devotees spin them clockwise while walking or during meditation: Pilgrims turned the prayer wheels as they circled the monastery.
