ghat

Sacred water descent

A ghat is a series of steps leading down to a river, especially in India, where people bathe, wash clothes, or cremate the dead.

The ghats of Varanasi along the Ganges are among the most sacred sites in Hinduism: Pilgrims gathered at the ghat before dawn.

Ghat also refers to a mountain pass or range in South Asia, as in the Western and Eastern Ghats.
