Kolkata
West Bengal's capital
Kolkata is a major city in eastern India, capital of West Bengal state, situated on the Hooghly River.
Formerly called Calcutta under British rule, the city was renamed in 2001 to reflect Bengali pronunciation.
It served as the capital of British India until 1911 and remains a cultural and intellectual center: We flew into Kolkata to visit the Kali temple.
