mud pot
Hot acidic pool
A mud pot is a hot spring where steam and gases bubble up through a pool of mud rather than water.
The mud forms when acidic volcanic gases break down surrounding rock into fine clay.
Mud pots gurgle and splatter, sometimes quite violently: The trail passed steaming mud pots and sulfur vents.
Found in geothermal areas like Yellowstone.
