scoria

Porous lava fragments

Scoria is rough, porous volcanic rock formed when lava cools rapidly while gas bubbles are still escaping.

The result is a dark, cindery material riddled with cavities—lighter than solid rock but too dense to float like pumite.

Scoria often accumulates around volcanic vents, forming cinder cones.

It's used in landscaping, drainage beds, and as lightweight aggregate in concrete.
