auroras

Sky's electric curtains

Auroras are luminous displays in the night sky caused by charged particles from the sun interacting with Earth's atmosphere, producing curtains and ribbons of colored light.

They appear near the poles—aurora borealis in the north, aurora australis in the south.

The singular aurora can also mean dawn or the Roman goddess of dawn, from whom the phenomenon takes its name.
