frozen ground
Soil turned solid
Frozen ground is soil or earth in which the water content has turned to ice.
The term appears in construction, agriculture, and geology where ground temperature affects what's possible: Digging was impossible in the frozen ground.
Ground that stays frozen year-round is called permafrost.
Frozen ground can also describe any cold, hard outdoor surface: We slept on frozen ground.
