free cities
Self-governing urban republics
Free cities are urban centers that historically governed themselves independently, outside the control of surrounding kingdoms or empires.
In medieval and early modern Europe, these were trading hubs granted special autonomy, like the Hanseatic League cities or the Free Imperial Cities of the Holy Roman Empire.
The term appears in fantasy fiction and games to describe similar self-governing city-states.
The merchant republic operated as a free city, answering to no king.
