prince-electors

German throne choosers

Prince-electors were the members of the electoral college of the Holy Roman Empire who held the exclusive right to elect the emperor.

Originally seven in number—three archbishops and four secular rulers—they formed the empire's most powerful tier of nobility.

The position combined territorial sovereignty with constitutional privilege, making prince-electors virtual kings within their own domains while collectively determining imperial succession.
