filmstock

Light-sensitive ribbon

Filmstock is the physical material—a strip of flexible plastic coated with light-sensitive emulsion—used in traditional photography and cinema.

Different filmstocks have distinct characteristics: grain, color rendition, contrast.

Cinematographers choose filmstock to achieve particular visual effects: They shot on grainy 16mm filmstock for a documentary feel.

Also spelled as two words: film stock.
