halation

Halo around brightness

Halation is the spreading of light beyond its proper boundaries in a photograph or image, creating a halo or glow around bright areas.

The effect occurs when light passes through the emulsion and reflects back from the film base.

In cinematography, halation sometimes appears intentionally for a dreamy or nostalgic look: The backlit scene had a soft halation around the windows.
