faro

Old West wagering

Faro is a card game once wildly popular in American gambling halls during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Players bet on which cards will be drawn from a dealing box, wagering against the house.

The game was notorious for cheating by both dealers and players: The saloon ran a crooked faro game.

Now largely extinct, faro survives mainly in historical fiction set in the Old West. (Capitalized Faro is a city in Portugal.)
