goldrush
Forty-niners' migration
A gold rush is a rapid influx of people to an area where gold has been discovered, most famously California in 1849 and the Klondike in 1897.
The term extends to any frenzied scramble for quick wealth or opportunity: the dot-com gold rush, a gold rush mentality.
