high card

Best lone rank

High card is the lowest-ranking hand in poker—five cards that form no pair, straight, flush, or other combination.

When no player has made a hand, the highest individual card determines the winner: I won with high card, ace.

The term also describes using the highest card to settle ties or make random decisions: We'll draw for high card to see who goes first.
