fanlight

Semicircular entrance window

A fanlight is a window, typically semicircular or fan-shaped, placed above a door or another window.

The name comes from the radiating glazing bars that spread like the ribs of an open fan.

Fanlights were especially popular in Georgian and Federal architecture, where they admitted light into entrance halls: The front door had an elegant fanlight above it.
