Aleppo

Levantine ancient city

Aleppo is a city in northwestern Syria, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.

It was Syria's largest city and commercial center before the Syrian civil war, when prolonged fighting devastated much of it.

The battle for Aleppo became a defining moment of that conflict.

Aleppo peppers, mild dried chilis, take their name from the city.
