timar

Turkish feudal estate

A timar was a land grant in the Ottoman Empire, given to cavalrymen in exchange for military service rather than rent.

The holder (timariot) collected taxes from peasants on the land and was obligated to report for duty with horses and equipment when called.

The system supported Ottoman military expansion for centuries before declining in the 17th and 18th centuries.
