exoplanets

Planets orbiting elsewhere

Exoplanets is the plural of exoplanet—a planet orbiting a star other than our sun.

The prefix exo- means outside, distinguishing these from planets in our own solar system.

Thousands have been discovered since the 1990s, many in searches for potentially habitable worlds: Astronomers detected exoplanets in the star's habitable zone.
