habitable zone
Life-permitting orbital band
The habitable zone is the region around a star where conditions might allow liquid water to exist on a planet's surface—neither so close that water boils away nor so distant that it freezes.
Also called the Goldilocks zone, after the fairy tale character who preferred things "just right." Earth sits within our sun's habitable zone, making the concept central to the search for extraterrestrial life.
