water world

Globe of seas

A water world is a planet or moon whose surface is predominantly or entirely covered by water, with no significant landmasses.

The term comes from planetary science and science fiction, describing worlds where oceans may be hundreds of kilometers deep: Scientists believe Europa could be a water world beneath its icy crust.

The 1995 film *Waterworld* popularized the concept, depicting a post-apocalyptic Earth flooded by melted ice caps.
