interferometry

Measuring through wave overlap

Interferometry is a measurement technique that combines waves—usually light or radio waves—to extract precise information about distances, surfaces, or physical properties.

The method works by splitting a wave, sending the parts along different paths, then recombining them; the resulting interference pattern reveals tiny differences between the paths.

Astronomers use interferometry to achieve resolution far beyond what single telescopes can provide, and the technique famously enabled detection of gravitational waves.

The observatory uses radio interferometry to image distant galaxies.
