exchange vows

Pledge mutual commitment

To exchange vows is to make reciprocal promises during a wedding ceremony—the bride and groom each pledge commitment to the other: They exchanged vows at sunset on the beach.

The phrase almost always refers to marriage, though it occasionally appears in other contexts where two parties make mutual pledges.
